MEADOW VIEW
FREDERICK COUNTY, VA

This new residence is a modern vernacular farmhouse perched on a hill overlooking the client’s family farm and the distant mountains beyond. The massing is a collection of simple forms reminiscent of a vernacular Virginia farmhouse. The white siding is a combination of cement board lap siding, at various exposures, and painted pressed metal.

Upon entry, the foyer opens up to a living room with an adjacent central two-story timber frame space over the kitchen. The kitchen flows into the dining room, which is an attached glass box overlooking expansive farm land.

The kitchen was thoughtfully considered, with the intent of elevating the ceremony of eating, entertaining, and cooking. By dividing the kitchen into visible and hidden areas, the storage and clutter is taken out of sight so that the cook and hosts can focus on cooking and entertaining as their guest take in the view.

A 1 ½ story room with telescoping glass doors serves as an indoor/outdoor cabin, allowing guests to enjoy the view from the patio before coming inside to warm up by the indoor wood burning stone fireplace. The master bedroom and garage gabled wings are attached to the main volume with one story pressed metal clad flat roof hyphens.
