FORT COLLIER CIVIL WAR CENTER
WINCHESTER, VIRGINIA

Our winning competition entry for the Fort Collier Civil War Center was a collaboration between Reader & Swartz and Siteworks Studio, a landscape architecture firm, from Charlottesville, Virginia.

Our approach to the project was to provide a general framework for using the entire site for a multitude of possible uses, including educational, recreational, and revenue-producing special events. Our master plan will allow the Center to evolve over many years, to allow for multiple phases and projects as funds become available.

The intent of the master plan is to activate a historically significant site, one that has significant educational potential. The components of the master plan can be approached in a ‘la carte’ manner, with phases implemented as fundraising goals are met. Each component of the master plan offers an opportunity for the visitor to engage in the history surrounding the site, and to enjoy its park-like setting.

The restored site will be an asset to the community and will become an important part of our community’s local Civil War education and tourism draw.
